18. Orkney Islands – Scapa Flow, a body of water in the Orkney Islands, is best known for the post-war scuttling of the German Fleet in 1919. A lesser-known historical event took place in October 1939 when a German submarine U47 torpedoed HMS Royal Oak in that same water. Travelling to Orkney to research this event for her new novel led to the more intriguing story of the beautiful Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, built by Italian prisoners of war using scavenged materials.
